Carolyn (Carey) Hardin is a professor, author and consultant with a Ph.D. in Communication and more than 10 years experience teaching and consulting in political and organizational contexts. She has trained political candidates, public officials and college administrators on effective public messaging, making effective presentations, and communicating across difference. In addition to her consulting experience, Carolyn has taught public speaking and rhetoric at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, both to traditional college students and in several programs focused on the advancement of diverse and underachieving minorities.

Carey received a B.A. in Mathematics in 2003 before working in the for-profit sector for four years. In 2015, she completed a Ph.D. and a year later accepted a position as assistant professor of media and American studies at Miami University in Ohio. Her research focuses on the culture of financial trading and risk assessment technologies in financial markets. She has written on the topics of neoliberalism, debt, retirement investing, value, financial technology and arbitrage and her work has appeared in journals including Cultural Studies, Journal of Cultural Economy and American Quarterly. She currently serves as the Reviews and Commentary editor for the Journal of Cultural Economy.
